This artifact is important because as teachers we not only want to introduce ourselves to the parents but we also want to get to know them and find ways to best communicate. One way to communicate is having a parent-teacher conference at least twice a year. I always want parents to be able to email me anytime if they want to set up a conference outside of the two offered. I want the parents to feel comfortable coming to me and discuss strategies that will best help their child improve on whatever the issue is. This parent-teacher conference sheet is really simple and should be kept on file as well. I would fill each of these out for all conferences prior to meeting with the parents and reflect on the conferences after. Having this sheet ready to go prior to the conference creates an organized and focused agenda. This sheet is also handy to keep on file and go back and look to see if the same concerns you and the parents are having are improving.
I would also make a copy of this for each students parents so they too can keep a copy on file and see if their child is improving in the areas that were addressed. Parent-teacher conferences are also a good opportunity to talk about issues outside of the classroom that may be important for the teacher to know. Sometimes students will have their grandparents come in for conferences, or have two moms, two dads, or only one parent. All of these different dynamics are important for the teachers to know. It is important to get to know them and make them feel comfortable. They are apart of the team I talked about previously and helping our students parents and guardians know that you are supporting their child and are in it together making sure they have the best educational experience as possible.
From this I learned, that our students guardians are also apart of the classroom team. When our students go home we want to make sure we are helping them outside of school as well. Helping parents with strategies that will help their children can greatly impact the student. Every child is important and I want to do the best I can in including parents/guardians as well. For parent-teacher conferences, I may also create sheets that are in students home language depending on if they are an ELL. I will also probably print student grade progress reports prior to the conference so anything on there that is concerning can be addressed. It may also be the case where I want to show parents how well their child is doing and it be more of a praise than a concern. They would be beneficial to print either way. Parent-teacher conferences are important and I will be a huge advocate for them when I become a teacher. It is important to establish a relationship and always begin by saying something positive about the student. Strengths before weakness. Always! To engage with parents you want to find common areas of interest so the parents feel comfortable engaging in conversation. It is important to make sure you make available conference times flexible so parents have a better opportunity of making the meeting. In each parent-teacher conference, there are several things you want to accomplish, and some of these include, helping everyone get on the same page, creating a team and partnership, and learning more about the student. This will help all parties involved develop strategies to benefit the student. It is important to have materials prepared to show examples of positive things as well as concerns you might have. It is always beneficial to have evidence. It may also be important to ask parents to come to the conference prepared with a couple questions or concerns they might have as well. I learned that it is important to create an inviting environment on conference day. If parents can see that you are organized, have a friendly environment, provide refreshments, have student work posted on the walls (no grades shown), they can better see and understand the kind of environment their child is in.
