Motivation is one of the biggest areas that teachers must be able to do. As teachers, we have to motivate our students to not only do their work, but also to make sure they are handing in successful work and want to be the best that they can. A great quote that we learned in class was, "If motivation is an innate or unchangeable characteristic, then we don't have to spend time and energy figuring out ways to motivate students" (p. 202). This quote is suggesting that if motivating our students becomes a habit then we won't feel as though we have to stop and motivate them. Another great quote was, "Teachers actions actually magnify students' initial levels of motivation." I love this quote because to be a teacher, you have to want to motivate your students and make a difference in their live. Motivation and attitude go hand in hand. If you are boring and sound like a Debby downer when you teach, then the students are not going to want to do the work, or even enjoy doing it for that matter. If you are energetic and positive, then students are more likely to respond better and really give an effort to succeed.
This artifact is a poster I would hang in my classroom. I really liked it because it helps motivate students within themselves (intrinsic motivation). Extrinsic motivation is not always bad, but it can become expected. We want our students to want success for themselves. I think this poster is extremely motivational and something I can even point out to students to remember. I also think it would be really cool to make it a classroom theme and maybe have students write about this quote every couple of weeks in a journal to see their mind set, or even how they want to achieve their dreams.
I learned a lot about motivation and some great strategies I learned about for increasing expectations for success include giving students a choice, providing informative feedback, allowing students to interact with their peers, recognizing effort and outcome, and simply providing motivational support. Some strategies for increasing the perceived value of a task include providing opportunities for success, relating the lesson to life, providing extrinsic rewards, having novelty and variety, having students respond actively, modeling interest and expressing enthusiasm, and having students set reasonable goals. By including some of these strategies everyday, and making motivation a habit rather than a hassle, students will be more likely to get work done successfully, as well as engage in the learning more. One of the main reasons why I wanted to become a teacher was so I could motivate students to become all they can be, which should be successful adults. I want to be the reason a student heads down a better path because I motivated them and believed in them.
