Welcome students and family to a new school year. My name is Miss. Tuttle and I teach seventh grade English Language Arts. I am excited about getting started with all of you. Together we will be a team, working towards individual goals and making sure we are making this school year successful and effective. In the first couple of classes you all will be getting to know each other and me. I will also be getting to know all of you. Below you will see a copy of the questions you will be given. This is important in finding similarities and differences amongst all of you. Telling me your interests and something you want to learn is important so I can create fun and engaging lessons that all of you enjoy. For students and family members feel free to email me at anytime and I will be glad to answer any concerns or questions you have. We are all in this together!
Getting acquainted with your students is important to find out what their strengths and weaknesses are. This artifact is included in the portfolio because getting to know your students help create that caring and respectful classroom. Students want their teachers to care about them. Depending on what students write on their "Getting to Know You" questionnaire, the teacher can use what interests the students in their lessons. This helps develop critical thinking because students will be able to make connections to what their learning and what they are interested in. It is also important to find out the strengths and weaknesses of each student and what type of learner your student is. Teachers can use their students strengths to help improve their weakness. Getting acquainted also helps develop the learning community. If parents and guardians can see that you are interested in their child and want to meet his or her needs, they feel as if their child is in good and caring hands. Students are going to feel just as nervous as the teacher and will also want to get to know you as well.
Research supports this as an effective and important artifact because if we do not get to know our students, we will not learn how our students prefer to learn. We need to try and meet the needs of all of our students and this is a great start to doing that. Students learn better when someone has interest in them as well. If a teacher is standing in front of the classroom just talking about content, the student will not be taking as much away compared to a teacher that is actively involved in their learning process, as well. The learning environment must be student friendly and this starts by having the teacher model a positive and caring attitude, which interest in his or hers students.
As a result of this artifact I have learned that getting acquainted with your students can be done in several different ways. You can do a questionnaire, or have student write a poem to describe his or herself. You can have students interview each other so they can find similarities and differences. It is important to discuss with your students that it is okay to have similarities and differences, and that we must always treat each other with respect. This will be modeled by the teacher. Students can learn life lessons from this activity and is a good lead into classroom rules and expectations.
