This artifact is included in my portfolio because like I have always said, organization and being prepared is important in being a successful teacher. The school schedule may be the same daily, however what you are teaching daily, changes. What is nice about having a plan book is that you aren't necessarily creating detailed lesson plans, but you are prepared on what you want to teach and why. Following a detailed lesson plan can often result in frustration if students are not understanding material and a different direction needs to be taken. Lesson plans have to allow for flexibility. Plan books also help differentiate between classes. As an adolescent grade level teacher, I may not teach the same grade level all day long. I may teach 5 sections of seventh grade English, and one elective, or like in the example above, I may teach two sections of seventh grade ELA, two sections of eighth grade ELA, and two sections of ninth grade ELA. Having plans for all different grade levels is important because it will be easier to shift gears after teaching two classes of the same grade.
The example of a daily and weekly schedule has five important parts to it. First is simply what you will be teaching and how you will do that. This includes class activities that will make up class time. Next is documenting what homework you want students to complete. Writing this on the homework board also helps students to come to class prepared and is an additional reminder of when things are due. Making notes to yourself of what you want to focus on, what your push-in teacher will be doing, and important themes/ideas/vocabulary to reiterate helps emphasis state standards and what students should be taking away from the lesson. Including materials also helps make sure you are prepared and have everything you needed to smoothly run your lesson. Including standards is also important because this is what you are teaching from. Standards are also state assigned skills that students need to master, or become good at. We want our students to reach a deeper level of understanding and analysis while learning, and following these standards help achieve that.
A daily/weekly schedule is important for many reasons and what I really learned from this is that having a plan book may not only be beneficial to you, but could also be helpful for special eduction teachers to look at, as well as substitute teachers, and other grade level teachers that you are collaborating on a unit with. It also good to keep your plans so you can fix what what worked and what did not work. Reflecting an improving methods of teaching also helps us become successful. I learned that you may not get to all the standards you have planned for but incorporating several standards help students practice important skills they need so they can do well on exams. Having a plan book also makes it easier to look back and get around materials for students that may have missed a significant amount of school. Plan books can be done in several different ways which is great because all teachers are different and organize differently, so they are beneficial to all types and kinds of teachers.
