This artifact is important in creating a caring classroom and having successful class management because our students family should be actively involved in their child's learning. Keeping in contact with parents and guardians is important to keep a good communication so our students are receiving the help they need at home as well as in the classroom. Although this is not always going to be the case, it is my goal to communicate with all parents and guardians and hope that they are helping their child at home. Keeping good communication is important because when students are struggling in a specific area, the teacher and parents can discuss strategies that both the teacher and the parent can help the child. For students with disabilities and have an IEP, this is particularly important. For some children, their parents are their biggest advocates and we have to keep in mind that they want the best for their child.
This communication log posted above is a good way to document how often you met with your students parents. It is good to keep these on file so you always have written proof to go back and look at in case it needs to be seen later on. I also liked the way it was laid out because it shows the reason why you contacted the parent or the parent contacted you. If you see charts for students where you nor the parents have reached out to one another because of no problems, that may be a good time to call that students parents and tell them how well their child is doing. Communication between parents and teachers do not always have to be based around a concern, but can also be based around praise and accomplishment. It is also important to mention that not all parents will be involved and getting in contact with them may be very difficult. All children will go home to families with different educational values so you may not receive parent support from all parents (even though we wish we did).
This artifact helped me learn that there are several different ways to communicate and document parent involvement. We as teachers, should keep parents up to date on assignments, units, themes, and other important events happening in the classroom. It is important to have a class website where parents can visit if needed and also use that as a resource to contact the teacher. Giving both students and parents the proper information on how they can contact you is also important and should be established in the beginning of the year. We want our students to be successful and receive the resources necessary in doing so. Often times, students that have supporting and caring families seem to do better in school. We want and encourage parent involvement do that all of our students are achieving all that they can.
